الملخص

High blood pressure in children has emerged as a significant public health concern globally, particularly in developing countries, attracting increasing attention from researchers and healthcare professionals. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of high blood pressure and its associated factors among children visiting the pediatric department of Abu Ali Sina Teaching Hospital in Balkh during the year 1403 SH. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 children (both boys and girls) across various age groups. Blood pressure measurements were taken using validated instruments under controlled conditions. Data on demographic characteristics, weight status, and other potential risk factors were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The study found that 25% of the children had either high blood pressure or were in the borderline stage. A positive correlation was observed between age and blood pressure, with the highest prevalence in the 11–14-year age group. Weight status was strongly associated with hypertension; 33.3% of obese children had elevated blood pressure compared to only 2.7% of children with normal weight. These findings align with international studies conducted in China, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina, highlighting the impact of modifiable risk factors such as obesity, unhealthy nutrition, and physical inactivity on childhood hypertension. The study emphasizes the importance of regular blood pressure screening among children in healthcare centers and schools as part of primary healthcare programs. Early identification and management of modifiable risk factors are essential to prevent hypertension and its long-term complications in children
