Harthama ibn A‘yan al-Balkhi was one of the prominent military and political figures during the Abbasid Caliphate, particularly in the time of Harun al-Rashid and al-Ma’mun, and a representative of the Khurasani soldiers who played a vital role in the establishment and consolidation of the Abbasid state. This article aims to examine the life and career of Harthama ibn A‘yan al-Balkhi and to clarify his place in the history of the Islamic world, especially in relation to Khurasan and Baghdad. The study seeks to address the research problem of why, despite his significant role in political and military developments, his influence on power relations and political stability has not been comprehensively studied. Using a descriptive–analytical method based on library sources, this research analyzes historical reports related to his military achievements, administrative responsibilities, and political relations with the Abbasid court. The results indicate that Harthama not only left an impressive record on the battlefield but also distinguished himself in political and military administration, serving for a time as governor of Khurasan. However, his relationship with al-Ma’mun gradually deteriorated, partly due to his dissatisfaction with the growing influence of al-Fadl ibn Sahl, which he perceived as a threat to the stability of the caliphate. In conclusion, Harthama ibn A‘yan al-Balkhi should be regarded as one of the most outstanding Khurasani commanders of the Abbasid period, symbolizing both the rise and tragic fate of Abbasid military elites
